Although Sleeve Gastrectomy is considered safe, there are some potential risks and side effects that should be taken into account:
Immediate Surgical Complications:
The procedure is quite safe and smooth. It’s because of the safety measures and modern technology that only 1%patients may suffer complications, andthese are potentially life threatening.
- Bleeding: Bleeding appears as drop in Hemoglobin, corroborated with overall worsening condition in firstthree days. It can be minor that resolves with or without blood transfusion. It can be severe that we have to go in again and stop surgically
- Leakage from Staple Line: There is a risk of leakage where the stomach is stapled, which can lead to serious complications requiring further treatment.
- Blood Clots: There’s a risk of developing blood clots after surgery, which can lead to deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism
Long term complications
- Gastrointestinal Issues: After the surgery, some patients may experience nausea, vomiting, or acid reflux. Additionally, some may face “dumping syndrome,” a condition that occurs when food moves too quickly through the stomach and small intestine.
- Nutritional Deficiencies: As the stomach size is reduced, it becomes harder to consume enough nutrients. Patients may face deficiencies in vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin B12, calcium, iron, and protein. Supplementation is necessary to prevent this. Therefore, lifelong multivitamin once daily is required.
- Mood Changes: After significant weight loss, some patients may experience mood swings or emotional challenges, as their body and lifestyle change significantly.
- Weight regain: in UpTo 30%, which may be due to resistance body, poor lifestyle and procedural limitations.
