A hernia occurs when internal tissue pushes through a weakened area of the abdominal wall. Depending on the size and complexity, it may be repaired using either minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery or traditional open surgery.
Most adult hernias are repaired using surgical mesh for added strength.
Like any surgical procedure, there is a small risk of complications, with an overall risk of approximately 5%. This risk may be higher in patients with certain conditions, such as obesity, diabetes, smoking, or other medical comorbidities.
Most patients begin light activity within 2 hours after surgery, can perform household chores within 24 hours, leave the house within one week, and achieve a full recovery within approximately one month.
